wisdom teeth and wisdom teeth removal

The appearance of wisdom teeth is something that everyone has to go through at some point in their late-teens or early-twenties, but have you ever wondered why we get them removed? Or when it is time to get them removed? As your go-to North Texas dentist, HomeTown Dental has the scoop on wisdom teeth removal in today’s Smarter Smiles.

Why Remove Wisdom Teeth?

Wisdom teeth are essentially your third set of molars that start growing in at around 17 years old. They can help you chew food if they grow in properly, but more often than not, this is not the case. Wisdom teeth can grow in sideways, crooked or in the wrong direction and cause pain in the back of your mouth. Since our food has gradually gotten smaller and easier to chew, the presence of a third set of molars isn’t necessary. This fact, in combination with the pain and complications growing wisdom teeth can bring, is why most people will have wisdom teeth removed.

When to Remove Wisdom Teeth

People generally have their wisdom teeth removed at some point in between ages 17 and 21. Wisdom teeth can grow into other teeth and damage them as they are pushed. They can also create open wounds in your mouth that give bacteria a chance to get inside your gums and cause infection. Since wisdom teeth can cause complications in your mouth, it is wise to visit a dentist at the first sign of pain caused by these growing teeth. Your dentist will let you know when they feel it is the best time to have them removed. Some people are even lucky enough to never need them removed.

Developing wisdom teeth is part of growing up and shouldn’t be seen as scary. These teeth cannot grow fast enough to damage your mouth if you are following the American Dental Association guidelines by visiting your dentist at least every six months. Since your dentist is the only one that can detect early signs of serious problems, it is vital that you make an appointment as soon as you feel dental pain caused by wisdom teeth.
