Cavities ail many, and it’s so important to take preventative measures against them with good oral hygiene. HomeTown Dental has the best tips and tricks to keep your teeth cavity-free and prevent cavities.
How Cavities Occur
Food and drinks with a high sugar content leave a film of plaque over your teeth, which can harden and eat away at the enamel of your teeth. This allows bacteria to enter the tooth and infect the inside, irritating nerves and causing pain and sensitivity. Without proper dental care (flossing and brushing regularly) your tooth is infected from the inside out.
Tips to Prevent Cavities
Preventing cavities is relatively simple. To avoid cavities, you should brush frequently, ideally after every meal if possible. Bringing a travel toothbrush to your office is a great way to make sure your oral hygiene is on point! Mouthwash is also a great way to keep your mouth clean. Rinsing with mouthwash can clean out the nooks and crannies your toothbrush can’t always reach. Buy a mouthwash with fluoride and swish with it after you brush your teeth. Additional cavity prevention tips include:
Tap water usually contains fluoride, which is great in the fight against cavities! Switching out bottled water for tap water is actually much better for your teeth.
- Sugar-free chewing gum is great for preventing cavities. If you chew some after every meal, you increase saliva production and un-stick some sugar from your teeth. Plus, chewing sugar-free gum will keep your breath fresh!
- Consumption of sugary snacks builds plaque, so limiting sweets or cutting them out completely can be a great way to prevent cavities. When you’ve got a sweet tooth, eat some fruit to enjoy something sweet without damaging your teeth!
- A majority of cavities occur near the back of the mouth where your brush can’t reach. Your local dentist can cover these teeth with sealants or plastic covers that prevent plaque from building where you can’t brush.
