Let’s face it. Accidents happen, but you can minimize the damage by knowing how to handle a situation when it happens. You’d be surprised how common it is for someone to accidentally damage a tooth, and if they don’t know what to do, then the damage done could be harder to reverse. HomeTown Dental’s Fort Worth dentist has some tips, so you know how to handle common emergency dental situations.

Baby Tooth Knocked Out

While baby teeth are meant to fall out, they are not meant to be knocked out. If your child has a tooth break off or get knocked out, first establish that it really is a baby tooth. Even if it is a baby tooth, it’s best to keep it moist and go to the dentist right away because they’ll be able to tell you if the whole tooth or only a portion of it broke off. If it’s the whole baby tooth, then your pediatric dentist will more than likely just let it be. However, if they discover that only part of it broke off, they will need to do a minor operation to extract the remaining tooth pieces.

Adult Tooth Knocked Out

Now if the knocked out or broken tooth is an adult tooth, it becomes a bit more serious of a situation. You should put the tooth in a glass of milk or an ADA-approved tooth preservation solution as soon as possible. Then you want to immediately schedule an emergency dental appointment with your Fort Worth dentist to replant the tooth and restore your smile. However, in some cases, the tooth will not be able to be replanted, and you will need to find an alternative form of restorative dentistry, such as a dental implant or bridge.

Preventing Emergency Dental Situations

Sure, accidents happen and are often unpreventable. However, there are many instances where an accidental broken tooth can be completely avoided. First and foremost, when playing any contact sport, wearing a mouthguard is absolutely essential. Secondly, simply avoid chewing on hard items like ice, hard candy and popcorn kernels. Last, but not least, do not use your teeth as tools, so no trying to twist off tops, open canned drinks or rip/cut something.
