flossing alternatives, Fort Worth dentist, HomeTown Dental

It’s safe to say that most everyone knows that flossing is important if you want to maintain an ideal dental health. However, some people may have a hard time using the traditional string floss for one reason or another. That’s why today HomeTown Dental’s Fort Worth dentist is sharing a few flossing alternatives so you can keep smiling a healthy, toothy smile.

But First, Why Flossing is Important

So we all may know and say that flossing is important, but do we really know why it’s so important? While simple brushing is able to remove most of the plaque that builds up in your mouth over the course of a day, only flossing can remove the plaque and food particles that get stuck in between your teeth. Neglecting to remove these excess particles greatly increases your chance of gum disease.

Try Floss Picks

If you have a hard time firmly gripping the floss, then try using a floss pick. A floss pick is a simple tool that allows you to clean under your gums and in between your teeth without having to wrap a long piece of floss around your finger. Floss picks should only be used once and then thrown away.

Water Flossers are Great Too

Now if you’re looking for a more reusable solution, our Fort Worth dentist’s personal favorite of all flossing alternatives is the water flosser, also called a water pick. A water flosser is a device that cleans by flushing the gums out with water, which is generally gentler on gums and much easier to use for the elderly than traditional floss. While water flossers are easy to use, you should still follow the specific instructions that accompany your specific water flosser.

Whether your 1 or 100, flossing is always important. You should begin flossing your child’s teeth as soon as they have two or more teeth side by side. To make sure you’re still doing a topnotch job at maintaining dental health, schedule an appointment with HomeTown Dental’s Fort Worth dentist. We’ll be more than happy to answer any questions you may have about flossing alternatives or other oral health subjects.
